What is hypnotherapy and how does it work

Hypnotherapy is simply the therapeutic process which utilises the state of mind achieved when someone has entered hypnosis. When it comes to hypnosis itself, no one actually knows quite how it works, only that it does. There are two commonly accepted theories for it; the state and non state model. The state model positions hypnosis as going into a special trance like state. In contrast, the state model says that hypnosis is just a normal everyday psychological process, like when you are totally engrossed in a book or film.

Lets take watching a film as an example, as we get totally engrossed in the story, this can evoke some strong emotions within us, we suspend belief as we get lost in the story. This is similar to what happens in hypnosis, it creates a state of inner focus, concentration and deep relaxation, result in increased suggestibility. This is where the real change happens, through the powerful suggestions given during hypnosis, this works to alter old beliefs and cultivating feelings such as confidence, resilience, motivation and strength which is then harnessed to effect the desired change.
