Frequently Asked Questions
What is hypnotherapy and does it actually work
Many people are skeptical of hypnosis which isn’t very surprising given what people have seen on state or TV. This isn’t helped by the fact that no one really knows how hypnosis works. This shouldn’t however take away from the fact that hypnosis does work and is incredibly powerful at delivering results and helping people get the change they want.
But back to the question of what is hypnosis. There are two main theories; the state and non state model. The state model positions hypnosis as going into a special trance like state. In contrast the state model says that hypnosis is just a normal everyday psychological process, like when you are totally engrossed in a book or film. When you are watching a film, something that has totally grabbed your attention it can evoke powerful and strong emotions in you. This in effect is what happens in hypnosis, it can create feeling such as relaxation, confidence, motivation, belief, strength. These states are incredibly powerful when combined with the suggestions given under hypnosis. This powerful combination is incredibly effective at creating positive change and giving you the results you want to achieve.
What does hypnosis feel like?
Hypnosis feels very similar to being in a state of deep relaxation where you are more receptive to the suggestions given. In many ways it is similar to a meditative state, the main difference is that instead of focusing on one thing such as the breath or mantra, under hypnosis you become absorbed in the suggestions given. These suggestions are driven by one overarching objective, to affect change fully aligned to what you want to achieve.
Can you make me do something I don’t want to do?
When people find out I’m a hypnotherapist, their first question is nearly always whether I’m going to make them cluck like a chicken. It’s not a surprise that people have some apprehension about hypnosis after seeing scenes like this on stage or screen! Hypnotherapy however is quite the reverse, it isn’t about losing control, it’s about taking it. The power of hypnotherapy comes from the suggestion given whilst in the hypnotic state. These are all focused on you achieving the results you want.
How many sessions will I need?
This will depend on a number of factors such as the issue itself, its severity and how someone responds to hypnosis. Most often three sessions is all it takes and in some just one session might be enough. Why not book a free 30 minute consultation where we can discuss what your goals are and I’ll be able to give a better indication of the number of sessions required.
